Project Description:
What started as a listing of NFL schedules for the fall of 1993 became one of Benjamin Foley's most recognized sites. Documented in the New York Times (1994) as the first sport oriented web site to appear on the web, Football Central became a powerhouse on the web, providing links and information for more than 10,000 football teams around the world. In addition it helped spawn what is known as the Professional Women's Football League, and helped football leagues in Peru, Mexico, and South Africa gain necessary supplies to form their own leagues. At it's peak Football Central contained nearly 20,000 HTML pages, 50,000 links, for 35 football playing nations. which were maintained by hand using SimpleText, Serverside Includes and FileMaker Pro to export the lists of links. In the Summer of 2000 Benjamin Foley made one simple mistake which would be the end to Football Central. He search engine optimized it. After showing up on Google, Lycos, and Excite for the keyword "Football" as the #1 pick, the traffic load went from 10,000 sessions per week, to well over 1 million. Being the site was a hobby site the hosting fees became enormously high and Benjamin could no longer afford to run the site. Benjamin still hopes to resurrect this powerhouse and continue the legacy with his new found skills.
